LG TV Blink Codes – Complete Diagnostic Guide
When an LG TV fails to power on, the standby LED blinks in a repeating pattern. This is a built-in diagnostic system: the number of blinks tells you which internal component has failed. This guide explains each LG blink code, the most likely faulty component, and what replacement part to order.
Before you start: Count the blinks carefully. The LED blinks a set number of times, pauses briefly, then repeats. That repeating number is your code. The meaning of blink codes can vary slightly between LG model series (LED, OLED, NanoCell), so always use your model number when ordering parts.

First Step for Any Blink Code – Power Reset
Before opening the TV, always try a full power reset first:
- Unplug the TV from the wall socket
- Press and hold the power button on the TV itself for 30 seconds
- Wait a further 60 seconds
- Plug back in and try to power on
Also disconnect all external devices (HDMI, USB, cable box) and try powering on with nothing connected. Software glitches and HDMI handshake issues can trigger blink codes that a reset resolves.
2 Blinks – Backlight or Power Supply
Two blinks on an LG TV most commonly points to a failed LED backlight or a fault on the power supply board.
Backlight test (flashlight method):
In a darkened room, point a torch directly at the TV screen while it attempts to power on. If you can see a faint image (LG logo or picture), the backlights have failed but the mainboard and panel are working correctly. This confirms you need to replace the LED backlight strips.
Backlight brightness tip:
LG TVs have a fail-safe circuit that shuts the TV down if the backlight draws too much current. If the backlight brightness was set very high (close to 100) before the TV failed, this circuit may have tripped. On some models this can be reset by accessing the service menu.
If backlight is not the cause:
Inspect the power supply board for bulging or leaking capacitors. A faulty capacitor on the power board is a common cause of 2-blink failures on LG TVs.
3 Blinks – Power Supply Board or Mainboard
Three blinks usually indicates a fault on the power supply board or mainboard. This is one of the most common LG failure codes.
What to check:
- Open the back panel and inspect the power supply board for bulging capacitors — a swollen or domed top on a capacitor is a clear sign of failure
- Check all ribbon cable connections between boards — a loose connection can cause this code
- If capacitors look healthy, the mainboard may have failed
Repair options:
- Replace individual capacitors — requires soldering. Match voltage (V), capacitance (µF), and temperature rating exactly
- Replace the full power supply board — plug-and-play, no soldering needed. More reliable than individual capacitor replacement
- Replace the mainboard — if power board replacement does not resolve the issue
4 Blinks – Overheating, Software or Hardware Fault
Four blinks can have several causes on LG TVs. Start with the simplest.
Overheating:
If the TV has been running for many hours or is in a confined space with poor ventilation, overheating can trigger this code. Turn the TV off, allow it to cool for 30 minutes, and ensure there is at least 10cm of clear space around all vents. Then try again.
Software fault:
A factory reset can resolve software-triggered 4-blink codes. To reset: press and hold the power button on the TV for 10 seconds. On some models this initiates a reset sequence.
Hardware fault:
If overheating and software are ruled out, inspect the power supply board and T-Con board. The T-Con board controls timing signals to the panel — a fault here causes a black screen with the TV otherwise appearing to start up normally.
5 and 6 Blinks – Power Supply or Mainboard
Five and six blinks both point to the power supply board or mainboard. The diagnostic approach is the same:
- Do a full power reset first (unplug, hold power button 30 seconds, wait 60 seconds)
- Open the back and visually inspect the power supply board for damaged capacitors
- If the power board looks healthy, test or replace the mainboard
On some LG models, 5 or 6 blinks can also be caused by a fault in the T-Con board, particularly if you can hear the TV attempting to power on (relay click) but no image appears.
No Blink Code – TV Completely Dead
If the standby LED does not light up at all:
- Check the power cable and wall socket
- Check the fuse in the plug (Ireland/UK models use a 13A fuse)
- If power is confirmed reaching the TV, the power supply board has likely failed completely
LG OLED-Specific Notes
LG OLED TVs (B, C, G series) have a different internal architecture to standard LED models. On OLEDs:
- There is no backlight — the panel itself produces light, so LED strip failures do not apply
- Blink codes on OLEDs most commonly point to the power supply board or mainboard (EBU board)
- OLED panel failures (burn-in, image retention) do not produce blink codes — the TV will power on but display a degraded image
