Vestel TV Platform – Repair Guide for Toshiba, Hitachi, JVC and More
If you own a Toshiba, Hitachi, JVC, Bush, Telefunken, Finlux, or Sharp TV and it has stopped working, there is a very good chance it is built on the Vestel platform — and that means the internal boards, common faults, and repair procedures are largely the same across all of these brands.
This guide explains what the Vestel platform is, which brands use it, how to identify Vestel boards inside your TV, and how to diagnose and fix the most common faults.
What Is the Vestel Platform?
Vestel is a large Turkish electronics manufacturer that produces TV components and complete TV assemblies for many well-known brands. Rather than designing their own electronics, these brands purchase Vestel chassis (the internal electronic assembly) and sell them under their own name with their own casing and remote control.
This means a Toshiba 43″ TV and a Hitachi 43″ TV from the same year may share identical mainboards, identical power supply boards, and identical LED backlight strips — even though they look completely different on the outside.
Brands that commonly use Vestel-built electronics:
- Toshiba (most models from 2013 onwards)
- Hitachi
- JVC
- Bush
- Telefunken
- Finlux
- Sharp (selected models)
- Polaroid
- Wharfedale
This is important for repairs: a Vestel mainboard from a Hitachi TV can often work in a Toshiba TV of the same size and year — and Vestel replacement boards are widely available and significantly cheaper than branded equivalents.
How to Identify Vestel Boards in Your TV
Open the back panel of the TV and look at the circuit boards. Vestel boards are clearly identified by their part numbers printed on the PCB. Common Vestel board number formats:
- Mainboards: 17MB82S, 17MB120, 17MB140, 17MB171, 17MBS82S
- Power supply boards: 17IPS11, 17IPS20, 17IPS60, 17IPS71, 17PW26
- All start with 17 — this is the most reliable identifier
If your TV’s boards start with “17”, it is a Vestel platform TV regardless of the brand name on the front.
Most Common Vestel TV Faults
1. TV does not power on — standby LED blinks
Blinking standby LED is the most common Vestel fault. The LED blinks a specific number of times indicating where the fault lies:

Important: Vestel blink codes are not as standardised as Samsung or Sony codes. The number of blinks can vary between chassis generations. Always identify your exact board number first.
2. Sound but no picture (backlight failure)
One of the most frequent Vestel faults — particularly on the 17IPS20 and 17IPS71 power supply boards. The backlight driver circuit fails, resulting in sound with a completely black screen.
How to confirm:
In a darkened room, shine a torch at the screen while the TV is on. If you can see a faint image, the backlight has failed but the panel and mainboard are working correctly.
Common causes on Vestel power boards:
- Failed LED backlight strips — one failed LED causes the entire string to shut down
- Failed MOSFET transistor (Q301) on the 17IPS20 board — the TV blinks 6–7 times, backlight briefly flashes on then off
- Failed MPS3394S LED driver chip — causes repeated backlight flashing and LED burnout
- Cold solder joints on the backlight boost converter section — intermittent fault that worsens over time
3. TV completely dead — no standby light
If there is no standby LED at all:
- Check the fuse in the plug first (13A for Ireland/UK)
- Check the main fuse on the power supply board
- A blown fuse almost always indicates a short elsewhere — check the power board for shorted MOSFETs or rectifier diodes before replacing the fuse
- If the red LED comes on briefly then goes off immediately when plugged in (before pressing power), this typically indicates a mainboard fault
4. TV powers on but freezes, reboots, or shows corrupted picture
Vestel mainboards can develop firmware corruption, particularly after a power surge or failed update. Symptoms:
- TV stuck on logo screen at startup
- Random reboots during use
- Picture distortion or missing colours
- Remote control not responding
Fix — USB firmware update:
- Find your TV’s model number on the sticker on the back
- Search for firmware for your exact model on the manufacturer’s support site (Toshiba, Hitachi, JVC etc.)
- Copy firmware files to the root of a FAT32-formatted USB drive
- With the TV off, insert the USB drive
- Power on — the TV will detect and install the firmware automatically
Note: On some Vestel models, removing the EEPROM chip (a small socketed chip on the mainboard, if present) allows the TV to boot in a factory reset state — useful when firmware is corrupt and the TV will not respond to USB updates.
5. HDMI inputs not working
HDMI port failures are common on older Vestel mainboards. If one HDMI port fails, try others before assuming mainboard failure. If all HDMI ports are dead, the mainboard HDMI controller has failed — mainboard replacement is required.
Ordering Replacement Vestel Boards
When ordering replacement parts for a Vestel-based TV, you have two options:
Option 1 — Order by board number
The board number printed on the PCB (e.g. 17MB82S, 17IPS71) is the most reliable way to find a compatible replacement. A board with the same number will be plug-and-play compatible regardless of whether it came from a Toshiba, Hitachi, or JVC TV.
Option 2 — Order by TV model number
Use the TV model number from the sticker on the back of the TV. This is less precise than the board number but works when the board number is not readable.
