Panasonic TV Repair Guide — Blink Codes, Plasma & LED Fault Diagnosis
This guide covers Panasonic Viera TV diagnostics and repair — from blink code reading and software resets to board-level fault finding. Panasonic produces both LED/LCD and OLED models (TX series in Europe), and historically produced plasma TVs through 2013. LED/LCD Models (TX series — current)
- A Board (Main Board) — the TV’s central processor. Handles Android TV / My Home Screen OS, HDMI inputs, audio/video processing, Wi-Fi, and communication with all other boards. Contains the main CPU, RAM, storage, and audio IC.
- AP Board (Power Board) — generates regulated DC supply voltages. On many LED models the LED backlight driver is integrated here.
- T-Con Board — timing controller for the LCD panel. Connected to the A board via LVDS or V-by-One ribbon cable.
- Backlight / LED Strips — LED arrays behind the LCD panel.
Plasma Models (TC-P / TH-P series — up to 2013)
- D Board (Digital/Main Board) — equivalent to the main board on LCD models.
- P Board (Power Supply Board) — main power board.
- SC Board (Scan Circuit Board) — drives the plasma panel columns. Located on the left side of the panel.
- SU/SD Boards (Sustain Upper/Lower) — drive plasma panel rows. Plasma-specific boards not found on LCD/LED models.
- SS Board (Scan & Sustain Board) — controls plasma energy recovery.
- A Board — main logic and audio board (also called the D board in some series).
🔴 Panasonic LED/LCD TV Blink Codes
When a Panasonic LED/LCD TV detects a startup fault, the front standby LED blinks a repeating pattern. Count the blinks before the pause — this is the error code. The following codes apply to most TX-series LED/LCD models.

🔴 Panasonic Plasma TV Blink Codes (TC-P / TH-P Series)
Plasma TVs have a more complex board set and correspondingly more detailed blink codes. These apply to Panasonic plasma models (2008–2013).

Plasma-specific fault symptoms:
- Pop sound then black screen with sound — classic Y-sustain (SU/SD board) failure. Most common plasma fault.
- Relay clicking with no startup — P board failing to hold supply voltages. Check P board capacitors.
- Half screen — vertical lines — SC board or its FPC connector to the panel.
- Flashing pixels, video artefacts — SU/SD boards or D board.
- Screen subtly grey (not black) when powered on — panel receiving some signal; focus on D board or SU/SD boards rather than P board.
🔦 The Flashlight Test (LED/LCD Models)
- Power on the TV and wait 30 seconds.
- In a dark room, shine a torch at a sharp angle on the screen surface.
- Look for a faint menu, logo, or image.
- ✅ Faint image visible — Panel and A board are working. Backlight or LED driver has failed. Focus: AP board backlight section or LED strips.
- ❌ No image at all — A board not producing video output, or T-Con / panel fault.
🛠️ Step-by-Step Diagnostic Workflow
Step 1 — Power Cycle / Capacitor Discharge
- Unplug from the wall outlet.
- Press and hold the physical power button on the TV body for 60 seconds.
- Wait 5 minutes (important for plasma — higher voltage capacitors take longer to discharge).
- Plug back in and power on.
Step 2 — Hidden Hard Reset (When Menu is Inaccessible)
For most Panasonic Viera models when the software menu cannot be accessed:
Hold VOL– button on the TV body + press MENU on the remote simultaneously for 5+ seconds
This forces a factory reset without menu access. The default Panasonic PIN code is 0000.
Step 3 — Remove All External Devices
Disconnect all HDMI, USB, satellite, and external speaker cables. VIERA Link (Panasonic’s HDMI-CEC) can cause a connected device to send unexpected commands that prevent startup. With all cables removed, re-test.
Step 4 — Clean the Vents and Fan
Panasonic TVs (especially larger plasma models) are sensitive to dust blockage. An 11-blink code or a TV that shuts down after warming up is often resolved simply by vacuuming dust from the rear vents. Check that any internal fan is spinning freely — a jammed fan causes the protection circuit to shut down the TV and produce a continuous blink pattern.
Step 5 — Visual Inspection (After Opening)
- Bulging or leaking capacitors — common on AP/P boards, especially after several years of use.
- Burn marks around MOSFETs or diodes — on the power board, especially around primary supply sections.
- Loose FPC/ribbon connectors — plasma models use Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) connectors between the SC, SU, and SD boards and the panel. These connectors loosen with age and thermal cycling. A loose SC board connector is a common cause of 6–8 blink codes on plasma TVs.
- Heat sink condition on A board — audio amplifier ICs on the A board are known to overheat and fail on some Panasonic models. Check the heat sink is firmly attached.
⚡ AP Board / Power Board — Diagnosis (LED/LCD)
The AP board generates all supply rails for the TV. Measure outputs with a multimeter (DC volts, black probe to chassis ground) while the TV is in standby:

A 3-blink code with an over-voltage reading on any rail indicates an AP board fault (voltage regulator failure). An over-current reading may indicate a short on the A board or LCD panel — disconnect boards one at a time to identify the short.

Factory Reset Methods
Standard menu reset (most models):
Menu → Setup → System → Factory Default → Yes (PIN: 0000)
Button combination reset (when menu is inaccessible, 2008–2019 models):
Hold VOL– on TV body + press MENU on remote for 5+ seconds
Service menu access:
TV on → press MENU on remote → 4 7 2 5
Or: Hold VOL– on TV body → press INFO (i) button on remote 3 times
Firmware Update via USB
- Find your exact model number — on the sticker on the TV’s back panel (e.g. TX-55GX800B, TH-50AS670D).
- Go to panasonic.com/uk/support (or your region) → enter model → Software/Firmware Downloads.
- Download the firmware and extract to a FAT32 formatted USB drive — files go in the root folder.
- With the TV in standby, insert the USB drive.
- Power on — the TV detects the update and installs automatically.
- ⚠️ Do not power off during the update — this can permanently damage the A board. Installing the wrong firmware model can also brick the TV.
